Haskell Varsity Volleyball opened the Haskell invite with a quick defeat, falling to the Sterling Warriors 0-3. Haskell looked tired in the first two sets but managed some energy in the third set.
Haskell’s only lead was the first point of the game; they kept the first set within one with the help of two aces from Mya Dalgai. Sterling took a 6-8 lead, Haskell would go on to lose set one 18-25.
Haskell came out in set two strong and took their biggest lead of the day at 7-4 off a Darrilyn Tessay ace. Haskell would quickly fall behind and lose set two 13-25.
Tressa Jim described the lack of energy, “We need to bring more energy right off the bat: it always takes us a while to get into it,” she continued on the plan for tomorrow to have and retain energy, “When we have momentum, we need to take and run with it.”
Jim talked about how fans help the team’s energy: “It always feels good whenever we get a kill and then there’s energy from the stands.”
Haskell would be neck and neck with Sterling, tying it at 12-12 on a Mecca Goldsberry ace. Haskell made it a close game, having a late-set resurgence but would fall just short losing the set 21-25.
The lack of energy was noticeable from some players. Jim, however, stood out with her hustle during the game.
Jim went through how she keeps herself prepared for games: “I just try to trust in my abilities and the work I’ve put in, and I try not to overthink it,” Jim continued about her mentality on the court. “When I see something open, I just go for it, and I just trust myself and my teammates.”
Haskell is back in Coffin Saturday, Sept. 5th for the end of the Haskell Invite. Haskell Varsity will face the Southwestern Moundbuilders at 3:30 p.m. and then the Tabor Bluejays at 6 p.m. The stat leaders for the game were Jim with 7 kills, Dalgai with 2 aces, Jaspen Ellenwood with 14 assists, and Alaina Dugi plus Ellenwood had 6 digs.
