Haskell women’s basketball home opener vs. Sterling College’s Warriors ended 70-78, marking Haskell’s third loss of the year. This game was a 20-point game, but Haskell almost came back in the fourth quarter.
“It feels really good knowing we can bring our communities together, and win or lose, they still come out to support us,” said Sierra Black Bull on the home crowd.
The first quarter saw some shots missed, with on-and-off ball defense from Haskell. They would only manage two points in the first seven minutes of the game while allowing 17 in the same span. They managed to get going in the last three minutes and ended the first quarter down 11-28. MorningRain Honani was responsible for eight of those points.
Haskell started the second quarter down by 23 but eventually ended down by 14. Coach Adam Strom was noticeably unhappy with their first-quarter production and made sure his team came out ready to compete. They went into halftime 34-48, with Honani being responsible for nearly half of the points with 16.
“Give it more effort and give it your all; our coach tells us to always not have the mindset of we’re going to lose. I feel like we showed that in the fourth quarter and leading up to the fourth quarter,” said Black Bull.
The second half ended with nothing of note for Haskell. Although the Warriors led by 16, Lish Spoonhunter matched Honani’s seven points in the quarter.
A spirited comeback attempt in the fourth quarter got Haskell within six points, but they couldn’t close it. Trinity Wheeler and Honani both scored six, spearheading the fourth-quarter comeback attempt. Haskell would lose 70-78, their closest loss of the new year.
“Even though we took a loss, we kind of see it as a win because now we know what we need to work on.” said Black Bull and she continued on what they’ll be working on, “We’re going to work on defensive rebounds and communicating louder but everything else is kinda already there.”
Haskell will be back home Nov. 7 at 3 pm against the Mount Marty University Lancers. This game comes on a busy weekend for Haskell sports as Haskell Men’s Basketball hosts the Ernie Stevens Jr. Classic and Haskell Cross Country will be hosting the CAC XC Championship.
