Lawrence, Kan.- Mackie Moore, a proud Haskell alumnus and longtime educator, has been named interim president of Haskell Indian Nations University, stepping into the leadership role amid a challenging period for the institution.
Moore, who previously served as Haskell’s chief financial officer, officially took on the interim presidency this month. Known for his hands-on leadership style and deep connection to the university, Moore brings both personal experience and a clear vision to guide Haskell forward.
“I never intended to be in this position, but when asked to serve, I will,” Moore said. “There’s a reason we’re still here. We’re resilient.”
A native of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, Moore graduated from Haskell and credits the university with shaping his path. Moore discovered a passion for education during his time at Haskell noting inspiration from guidance counselor Manny King. He later taught at the College of the Muscogee Nation and worked in post-secondary education before returning to Haskell.
Moore’s immediate priorities include addressing recent campus challenges, such as the recent air conditioning failures in Blalock Hall, and preparing for the upcoming 2025 fall semester. “This past year has been draining for everyone,” he said. “The fall semester is our reset button. We’re going to show new and returning students why they chose Haskell.”
With a focus on rebuilding consistency and helping students succeed, Moore aims to help Haskell move from “surviving to thriving.”
“I’m here for the students and this university,” he said. “My mission is to make Haskell the best it can be.”
