LAWRENCE, KS – Dr. Francis Arpan, (Yankton Sioux) tribal member officially announced his resignation as President of Haskell Indian Nations University today during a farewell gathering at Stidham Union.
The event, attended by Haskell administrators, staff, and guests from both Haskell and the University of Kansas, was marked by warm farewells, a catered lunch, and a farewell cake. The mood was bittersweet as colleagues gathered to celebrate Dr. Arpan’s tenure and express appreciation for his leadership.
In his remarks, Dr. Arpan called this moment a “new chapter” and reassured the campus community that “HINU will continue on.” He shared optimism about the university’s future, noting that enrollment numbers are looking strong. “I will miss this place deeply,” he said. “Thank you for letting me be part of this journey.”
Dr. Arpan, who brought years of experience in higher education and a deep commitment to Indigenous student success, served as a stabilizing presence at Haskell during a time of change. His departure marks the end of a significant chapter in the university’s leadership.
Stepping in as Interim President is Mackie Moore, who officially assumes the role today.
Moore’s appointment signals continuity for the university as it prepares for the upcoming academic year and ongoing strategic planning efforts.
The Haskell community now looks ahead to its next chapter under Moore’s interim leadership.
