The University of Kansas Pow Wow-FNSA (First Nations Student Association) kicked off great! There were many Native vendors with food and beverages for the whole day. The event was open to the whole Lawrence community, and the powwow was entire all day. Vendors from many areas, local and out of state, came to show their products and show support. The event had plenty of Indian tacos, clothes, beadwork from local beadwork artists, as well as kombucha and other beverages. Haskell students also participated in vending as well as dancing in the powwow representing their dancing prowess. Haskell faculty helped with the powwow, including Manny King as the emcee.
During the powwow, the community gave the Brings Plenty family blessings and strength. There was a tipi set up at the event, with small areas for children to read and parents to read to their children near by with Native children’s books and short stories. The powwow went on most of the day and into the night as students and visitors came and went.
Towards the end of the powwow, a Haskell student had a medical emergency during one of the dances and was rushed to the hospital. She is currently in the hospital and the family and friends are raising funds to help with her hospital bills, which we will include the information on what we can do to help below.
