Haskell Indian Nations University women’s indoor track and field team concluded their 2023/24 indoor season on a high note at the American Midwest Conference Championships on Saturday.
In their first year as a member of the American Midwest Conference, the women fighting Indians finished 6th place with 50 points. The day started off strong for Haskell as the women’s Distance Medley Relay (DMR), made up of So Heidi Thomas, Jr Aysa Benally, Fr Liani Coon, and Fr Yanibah Begay, finished on the podium in 3rd place with a time of 14:32.69. Not to be out, the 4X800m relay team of Jr Tiajhae Nez, Fr Bailey Mike, Jr Jayme Morris, and Fr Kaydence Platero set a new school record of 10:31.71 became the first indoor track and field Conference Champion in school history. In one of the biggest upsets of the championships, Jr Aysa Benally, who came into the day as the 6th seed in the 60m dash, placed 2nd in a time of 8.09. rounding out the podium finishes for the Indians was turned in by Junior Tiajhae Nez finishing 3rd place in the 800m with a new school record time of 2:29.30.
