Haskell Indian Nations University men’s and women’s basketball teams put on 155 Live where they showcased their players. Each team split into Gold and Purple squads where they played two halves of basketball with a challenge in between.
The women played first, with Gold taking a 6-1 lead. Purple played some great defense and turned that defense into points getting a 6–7 lead but it was short lived. Gold would get some free throws and take a 10-7 lead into half.
Men’s basketball would take the courts and see some early theatrics with an alley-oop from purple in an early battle as there would be four lead changes with the last being a 7-8 lead by Purple. Purple would keep a 14-18 lead into half.
The halftime festivities would be a shooting challenge where a team of three would need a layup, free throw, three pointer, and finally a half-court shot in under two minutes. Teams had to designate a person for each thing until the half-court shot where they’d all get attempts until they made it. The winning group was the Women’s basketball head coach Adam Strom’s group finishing with 58.5 second left.
Women’s basketball would re-take the court and Gold would only grow their lead with their biggest lead being eight points at 20-12. Purple would have a near comeback but lose 26-23 with it becoming a three point game in the final second. The full game showed great defense and some good paint play as most of the points came on fast breaks off of steals.
Men’s basketball would pick back up with Purple jumping out to a ten point lead at 21-31 which included another alley-oop. Gold would get it within two twice at 34-36 and 36-38 before trying to take a timeout which wasn’t allowed. Purple would win 38-43 with no last second miracles for Gold ending the night. The men’s full game showed some great distance shooting and good pain defense.
The Haskell women’s home opener is scheduled for 2 p.m. Oct. 31 against Sterling College. The Haskell men are scheduled to host Oklahoma City University at 8 p.m. Nov. 6 in the Ernie Stevens Jr. Classic.
