Honoring Native Artistry at Haskell’s Annual Art Market

Haskell Indian Nations University hosted its annual Indian Art Market on Saturday, Oct.4th, and Sunday, Oct. 5th at the HINU powwow grounds. The annual event draws hundreds of visitors and featured a wide range of Native artisans selling everything from pottery and jewelry to ribbon skirts and baked goods.

The art market also welcomed various food vendors along the famous “Frybread Alley”offering a variety of fried treats and refreshments such as frybread, meat pies, snow cones, and the classic powwow lemonade to help quench the shopping thirst.

Entertainment was another aspect of the weekend, with powwow dancers performing on both days. HINU’s very own Powwow Club took the opportunity to highlight their talent, dancing in a range of different styles bringing even more energy to the event.

This year’s market served as yet another opportunity for cross-cultural exchange, giving Native artisans important economic opportunities while allowing visitors to purchase authentic Native artwork and learn more about Indigenous culture and creativity.
