Rooted in Haskell, Rising in Service

LAWRENCE, KANSAS – September 11, 2024, at 12:30 p.m., SSgt Joshua Hernandez celebrated a major milestone in his military career with a promotion ceremony. Hernandez, a proud Haskell Rascal, is the youngest son of Jan Begay, who devoted 40 years of service to Haskell Indian Nations University. Raised in Lawrence and a graduate of Lawrence High School, Hernandez has served in the U.S. Army for nine years.

His current commander, Captain Perez, led the ceremony, recognizing Hernandez’s dedication and accomplishments. Hernandez’s journey from Haskell’s halls to the Army reflects the enduring values of community, perseverance, and service instilled in him from a young age. The celebration honors not just his military achievements but the family and Haskell legacy that helped shape him.
