Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs Bryan Newland Visits Haskell Indian Nations University

On Thursday, September 19, 2024, Haskell Indian Nations University hosted a special event with Bryan Newland, the Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs. The meet-and-greet occurred at the Tommaney Library from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., where students could engage with Newland and ask questions. Lunch was provided for the first 80 students who arrived and signed in.
Newland began the event by introducing himself and sharing his Indian name, “Walks Many Paths,” which reflects his heritage from the Place of the Pike near Lake Superior in northern Michigan. A Michigan State University alumnus, Newland pursued law school there before moving to Washington, D.C., where he worked under the Obama administration.
During his visit to Haskell, Newland discussed several key initiatives underway on campus. He addressed important topics such as combating sexual harassment, campus infrastructure improvements, enhancing internet services, land development, and ensuring the safety of students and staff.
The event concluded with an open forum, allowing students to voice their concerns and offer suggestions for how the government can better support Haskell. The discussion discussed what steps could be taken to improve the overall student experience and education at Haskell Indian Nations University.
