On February 26, 2026 Haskell Indian Nations University hosted a ceramic painting event for students in Tecumseh Hall, organized by the student activities and recreation department. With spring break just two weeks away, Haskell students are managing their coursework while preparing for the upcoming midterms. The university hosts events to help students relieve stress, enjoy fun activities, and take breaks from their studies. Currently, the Haskell campus offers activities to help. They are currently holding both volleyball and basketball intramurals in Tecumseh Hall and plan to introduce more events in the future.
Skylaa Wilson, a member of the Comanche Nation of Oklahoma and a student at Haskell, came up with the idea for this event. Her family in Lawrence enjoys visiting Sunfire Ceramics—a relaxing pottery-painting studio known for its wide selection of glaze colors.
Inspired by these visits, Skylaa decided to bring the experience to Haskell so that other students could participate as well. Once each semester, Skyla partners with the student activities and recreation department and Sunfire Ceramics to host the event. She selects over 20 party-sized pottery pieces and provides paint, brushes, and all the supplies students need to enjoy the activity.

Skylaa shares why she organizes these events: “We have so many creative people here, and I know they love expressing their art, feelings, and emotions. It’s also a tradition for me—I’ve hosted one every single semester I’ve been here.” She looks forward to holding more ceramic painting events on campus in the future.
One event, she said, people can look forward to is the Easter egg hunt on April 4. This will be an event held on the Haskell campus, open to different divisions and the whole community.
