The Power of Love in Dancing: Haskell’s Welcome Back Valentine’s Powwow

On Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 2026, Haskell Indian Nations University welcomed students, faculty, and community members to a fresh start to the semester with the Welcome Back Spring Powwow. The powwow was held inside Coffin Sports Complex, where attendees gathered in the gymnasium to view and participate in the event. Artists and food vendors were also present, selling earrings, necklaces, shirts, and frybread.

The event was held for participants of all ages, from children to the elderly. Categories for dancers were announced, including tiny tots, jingle dress, fancy dancers, and northern and southern traditional. As the event was held on Valentine’s Day, a sweetheart dance was initiated on the floor, with couples, family, and friends participating. The event also included activities for students.

Haskell students gathered on the main floor to participate in a dance competition. Participants were selected for a final round competition; all who won and participated got a rose. Students also gathered in a circle around prizes laid across the floor, including ramen, fidget toys, and shirts. They sprinted to collect prizes, which resulted in the floor being cleared, leaving only a leftover of fidget toys and crushed ramen.

The gourd dance, held in honor of Rex Cully, scheduled from 4 to 6pm, was cancelled out of respect following a sudden death in the family. Many people were disappointed but were understanding, as continuing the gourd dance would have been discourteous. Despite the unfortunate circumstances, the event concluded on a positive note, marking a meaningful  Valentine’s Day and an exciting beginning to a new semester.
