Valentine’s Heartbreak Strikes Early in Haskell Loss

Haskell men’s basketball gets a heart-shattering loss on Senior Night versus Hesston. losing 85-86 with a last-second heave hit off the backboard as time expired. However, it was an inspiring second half that brought Haskell back in the game. Before the game, Jesse White was honored for his 1,000-point career achievement ball.

The first half started off with a punch-counter punch system, with Haskell taking the lead and then Hesston regaining the lead. However, Hesston held the advantage to end the half, with Haskell down 35-42, and Haskell’s largest lead being 4 points.

White, who was clearly not content with 1,000 points, continued scoring as he led the team at halftime with 17 points. During halftime, Nehemiah Boykins, Tyson Radermacher, Alexander Ellenwood, and Nate Jim were honored, but any celebration was cut short as they headed to the locker room to game-plan for the second half.

The second half started with Haskell retaking the lead for the last time when it was 45-44. After this, Haskell quickly lost its momentum following a Hesston timeout, at one point falling behind by 14.  Haskell started its comeback after a momentum-shifting 3-pointer by Preston Olney, going on a 10-0 run to make it an 80-81 game.

After a series of free throws, Haskell had the ball on their side of the court with no timeouts. The ball was in Jesse’s hands with 2.3 seconds left as he dribbled down the court. He heaved a three-quarter shot; it had the distance as it hit the backboard, but he missed it. White led the team with 26 points, and Boykins was not far behind him at 25.
