Getting to visit Anchorage, Alaska, for a week is not long enough to see all the beautiful sites, but getting to see some of this wonderful state, has allowed me to learn more about the Alaskan Natives and be able to bond and connect with them. We as Indigenous people in the United States all have been wronged, land stolen, children sent to boarding schools, and even tried to make us extinct, but one thing is for sure is that we are strong, we are beautiful, and we are still here fighting for our land, language and cultures. I for one am very happy I got to spend a few days connecting with our Alaskan Native brothers and sisters.
The people are the most welcoming people I have met in a long time, offering different types of food like moose soup, moose jerky, smoke salmon, spicy salmon jerky, and fresh whale that is sweet and not fishy tasting, to me tasted like watermelon. The mountain range Chugach that makes up most of the Pacific Coastal Range is really a site to see. The Natives their telling us how they still use natural resources like animals and plants to survive still, how they hunt and cure the meat after a successful hunt, is neat how they take the time to prepare it. So if you ever get a chance to visit Alaska please go and see for yourself how beautiful it is.
