On Sunday, Oct. 27, from 4 to 6 p.m., Haskell Indian Nations University hosted a Trunk or Treat inside Coffin Complex, where Haskell Athletics athletes and staff opened their doors to the community for a Halloween celebration.
All athletic teams participated, each with a themed booth where they handed out candy, played games, and enjoyed time with children and families who attended.
Although Trunk or Treat events typically feature decorated car trunks, this indoor event showcased creative, handmade booths set up around the Coffin Sports Complex court. The event fostered community outreach and team building through the Halloween season.
Coach Adam Strong, head coach of the women’s basketball team, said, “Today I’m here on behalf of the Trunk or Treat. My ladies are the Minions, and it’s a great day and great time for us to interact with the community — in particular the youth — so they see us both in uniform and in costume.”
Herold Merrick, a player from the men’s basketball team, said, “Our theme tonight was Harry Potter, and so far we’re loving the event. There are a bunch of little ones running around in costumes excited for the candy.”
Grace Greenwood from Haskell’s softball team said, “We’re all part of the Shrek swamp today, and this event is really fun. It’s giving the kids a lot of opportunities to try games and get candy as they go.”
Therann Moore from Haskell’s track and field team said, “Our theme is The Lorax, and this event is important because it connects us to our community members. It makes them feel like they are needed in the college just as much as we need them.”
Jesse Estes from the women’s volleyball team said, “I’m enjoying the Trunk or Treat event, and we are the Super Marios.”
A representative from the Haskell Health Center added, “This event is important for our community, and since I’m from the Health Center, I decided to bring toys instead of candy to include a healthier alternative.”
