Haskell Indian Nations University has officially been placed on “Notice” by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), the university’s accrediting body. While Haskell’s accreditation remains, this designation signals that the institution is at risk of falling out of compliance with several core accreditation criteria.
In a letter dated July 8, 2025, the university stated “meets, but with concerns,” the following criteria:
- Academic rigor and quality of offerings
- Faculty and staff sufficiency
- Program review and quality assurance
- Assessment of student learning
- Integrated planning and improvement
Additionally, Haskell was found to be non-compliant with Assumed Practice D.4, which relates to how the university collects, analyzes, and uses institutional data for decision-making.
This designation follows a comprehensive evaluation process, including site visits and a hearing before the Institutional Actions Council. As part of the Notice requirements, Haskell must host a formal HLC visit by December 2026 and submit a full report demonstrating institutional improvements.
“We were aware of and understood some of the concerns stated,” said Dr. Milford Muskett,
Haskell’s Vice President of Academics and Accreditation Liaison Officer. “We now have about 14 months to demonstrate our work and provide evidence that we are making efforts to regain full accreditation.”
The university is forming an Accreditation Committee and a Program Review Committee to address the issues raised. Public forums and updates will be made available to keep students informed throughout the process.
While the Notice status may raise concerns, Haskell leadership emphasized that they are committed to moving forward. “We will continue to support our students and community to fulfill our mission and vision,” Muskett added.
The next major review will take place in 2026, with HLC set to decide in 2027 whether to remove the sanction, extend it, or take further action.
