155 Indian Run Club’s Successful First Annual Run for Cole Brings Plenty
At 9 a.m. on April 5, 2025, dozens showed up at the Billy Mills Cross Country course for a 5k run/3k walk as a memorial for late Alumnus Cole Brings Plenty. Co-founders Jayme Morris and Kathryn Tso describe putting the run together as a means of community and in memory of Brings Plenty on the club’s Instagram page. Photos courtesy of Kathryn Tso.

Haskell community members throughout the memorial run displayed in red t-shirts and red handprints to bring awareness to #JusticeForCole and other relatives affected by Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples (MMIP).

Haskell’s Spring Resilience Powwow
Saturday, April 5, the weekend closed with the Haskell Resilience Powwow, a rescheduled dance to make up for the Spring Welcome Back Powwow that had been cancelled due to recent, abrupt terminations of HINU’s staff. Several specials were held throughout the evening, two hosted by head dancers Darrell Hill Jr. and Sara Bointy, and a student giveaway for current students.
Allies of Equality and Student Government Association partner throw Queer Prom
Prom took place immediately after the Resilience Powwow on April 5. From 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., Stidham Union was decorated from wall to wall with rainbow masquerade décor. The host clubs provided various snacks, some of which were donated by the 155 Indian Run Club’s leftover refreshments from their morning Cole Brings Plenty Memorial Run.
The evening celebrated queer and two-spirit students on campus, and the end of the night crowned student Gwen Smith and professor David Titterington as Prom Queen and King.

Miss Haskell hosts Women’s Empowerment Week to Close Out Leadership Position
Last week on campus, Miss Haskell, Kansas Clifford, and HINU student Angelina Giago hosted a Matriarch’s Week full of events. At least once a day from Monday through Sunday, the two offered resources for Women’s Empowerment, aiming to uplift Indigenous women on campus through cultural, matriarchal teachings.

The week started with a tipi-raising practice hosted by HINU Alumnus AJ Holder on Monday, April 7. Followed by two community discussions held on Tuesday, April 8, and Wednesday, April 9; each covered traditional women’s singing hosted by Alumni Miracle Spotted Bear and Uriah Little Hoop and restoring justice in the face of violence hosted University of Kansas professor by Sarah Deer, respectively.

April 10 a ribbon skirt workshop was held by Alumni Ahnawake Tokekoyah and AJ Holder and HINU student Tawiyaka Star Comes Out. Finally, a “Tea-Pi” Party to celebrating the Matriarch Rising week on April 13th was held at Adobe Flats on campus, featuring snacks and tea for those partaking.
