LAWRENCE, Kan. (Feb. 23, 2025)- Haskell Indian Nations University brought the community together for a special Valentine’s Day-themed round dance, celebrating Native traditions with a touch of extra love.
The gymnasium was filled with love and laughter while students, faculty, and community members participated in the event. The evening featured a variety of special dances, including the Sweetheart Dance, Side-Step, and the Best Ribbon Skirt/Shirt competitions, which highlighted the beauty of traditional Indigenous attire.

Adding to the excitement, the Tiny Tot Jam was sponsored by Little Miss Youth of Lawrence, providing a joyful moment for the youngest dancers. Meanwhile, the Potato Dance, a fun and interactive competition, was sponsored by Jr. Miss Indian Youth of Lawrence.

The event was hosted by emcee Chago Hail, with Mitchell Baker serving as the stickman. The night’s powerful and uplifting music was provided by talented singers Riley Spoonhunter, Ashton Fish, Noah Yazzie, and Sunhawk Thomas, whose voices resonated through the packed gymnasium.

Beyond the dancing and celebrations, this event held deeper meaning for the HINU community. On Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, the campus was shaken by the news of Haskell employee layoffs, casting a shadow over what is traditionally a day of love and appreciation. The round dance served as a powerful reminder of resilience, giving the community an opportunity to come together, uplift one another, and honor the true meaning of Valentine’s Day—love, unity, and cultural strength.
Despite challenges, the HINU community remains strong, standing together and putting culture first, no matter what obstacles arise. This round dance was not just an event—it was a testament to the enduring spirit and deep-rooted traditions that keep this community thriving.
