Native Threads: Celebrating Fashion and Art in Indigenous Cultures

On Sept. 1, 2024, The Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas opened a new exhibit called “Native Fashion.” This exhibit shows Indigenous fashion’s wide variety and creativity with pieces from the 19th century. Guests will have the opportunity to see everything from traditional outfits and high fashion to streetwear and jewelry representing over 40 tribal nations. The exhibit is split into four main themes: Resilience, Representation, Resistance, and Relations until January 5, 2025. Admission to the Spencer Museum is free, and this exhibition is open to everyone. The exhibit also has workshops for Native designers and models, including basket weaving, artist talks, and panels, making it a great place to discuss Indigenous fashion and identity.

On Dec. 14, 2024, there will be a runway show at the museum highlighting modern Native fashion and celebrating Native designers from-  p.m. in the Kansas Union Ballroom. This event is open to the public; however, free tickets are required. For more information, visit the Spencer Museum website.
